THE DISNEY OBSESSION

It all started with a spoon and a spatula. I was in Disney World many moons ago and saw the Mickey Mouse© utensil set in a shop in the park. I picked it up as a gift for my mom. I’ve added a few kitchen things over the years, like a bag clip that came free with treats from Disney World. My mother added a Disney cookbook.

When my youngest grandchild came of age to make his first trip there, I thought it would be fun to add some plastic themed glasses and found these party cups on Amazon. The description says that they are disposable, but they are heavy plastic and are holding up well enough to be used for years to come.

My original thought was to bring in a few pieces to put smiles on the faces of all the little visitors to the house, but now I’m off and running. If one little piece brings one smile, how about two pieces? Three? Four? Twenty? During my last trip, I sent this picture to my mother and daughter and asked if it was too much Mickey.

My daughter replied that you can never have too much Mickey. Hmm. Challenge accepted. I find myself hunting more fun pieces all the time. Amazon is good for modern pieces, such as this salt and pepper shaker set.

Nothing in my collection is just for decoration. Everything has a practical use. Every kitchen needs cups, salt and pepper shakers, oven mitts, etc. Why not make them fun? One other fun but practical thing I ordered was this spoon rest.

Disney Springs has kitchen accessories at a couple of their stores. However, they don’t always have the classic red, black and yellow Disney accessories on their shelves. When I can’t find what I want at Disney on-site shops or on-line at the Disney store, I will look on Amazon, and occasionally, at Hobby Lobby. The mugs in the picture above came from a Target store near Disney World. The white silicon oven mitt was a gift from my daughter-in-law and grandson, so I can't refer you to a source for that one.

Antique stores are another great source of the classic Disney glassware. It’s usually a bit pricey at antique shops but those few pieces I have found are well worth the cost.

My small but growing collection adds a lot of light and visual energy to the kitchen. Kids aren’t the only ones who smile when they see it all.

When will I stop buying Mickey Mouse© kitchen accessories? I don’t know. I’ve seen Disney themed rugs, toasters, coffee makers, clocks and even sink stoppers. There will come a time when it will all be a bit much, but I’m not there just yet.
