AN EMPTY WALL

My little Florida place is just full of issues, but I love solving little problems like that. I had two little things that were bothering me on my last visit to the house: 1) An unpleasantly blank dining room wall; and 2) Not nearly enough kitchen cabinet space. I managed to revolve both of those issues in one fell swoop, and I had a lot of fun in the process.

The answer to both of those problems was a simple hutch. Finding a decent enough hutch these days is not as easy as it might seem. The local furniture shops were full of TV entertainment centers, sofas, and beds, but I struggled to find a simple hutch or pantry cabinet suitable for the dining room.

Finally, I stumbled across this nice little piece on Amazon. It gives me the right amount of storage space for bulky pantry items, in addition to my modest Mickey Mouse memorabilia collection.

At $199.00 here on Amazon, it's a bargain. That being said, it's not exactly an heirloom piece when it comes to quality, and it was a huge pain to put together. However, it was worth it in the end. Given the limited wear and tear it will receive, it should suit my needs nicely for several years to come.

I filled the lower cabinets with all the chips, drinks, and snacks that I didn't have room for in the kitchen. Then I had a bit of fun relocating some of my memorabilia to the upper, glass-front cabinets. I topped it off with a faux boxwood plant from Hobby Lobby.

Once the hutch was in place and all spaces were filled, I still felt as though the wall was missing something. It looked somewhat harsh, that big black piece of furniture sitting there all by itself. I experimented with various things from around the house, but nothing worked.

After staring at it for a few days, I decided that plants on either side would do the trick. I couldn't buy live ones because no one would be there often enough to provide the care that live plants require. After one failed attempt with some decidedly cheesy looking specimens, I found reasonably realistic faux plants that anchored both sides and that filled out the space quite nicely. They definitely softened the previously harsh look. I paid $109.00 for a set of two here on Amazon.

I also wanted more Mickey memorabilia in that room. I usually collect things from antique stores or Disney Springs, but that can be a trifle expensive, and my budget for this particular project was already stretched. I also felt that the room was somewhat out of sync with the neighboring room which is all decked out in blue and white. I decided that a couple of sorcerer Mickeys would fill the space and pull the rooms together a bit more cohesively.

After much searching, I was delighted to find two fun, affordable prints on Amazon. They completed the display by adding a fun pop of blue that coordinated with the blues in the adjoining room. The price was awesome, a mere $28.00 for each one. Click here, if you are interested in the light blue, and here if you prefer the darker blue. You won't be disappointed in the quality. They are of a higher quality than the price might indicate.

Those few pieces from Amazon improved the dining room in terms of both form and function. Who could ask for better than that?

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted an update because I haven’t been doing all that much on the house. Things are definitely picking...
