It's been a while since I've posted because I spent most of 2023 taking care of my son, Nik, who sadly lost his battle with brain cancer last October. It was the most devastating thing I have ever experienced but I am determined to not let it break me. I've learned that keeping extra busy helps me heal, so now I'm once again working on the house and ready to write some fresh content for the blog.
When I first arrived at the house in January, I found that the space heater (disguised as a fake fireplace) had died. Florida is having a colder winter than I've experienced in years past, and Perkins Place does not have a central HVAC system. We have long relied on a small wall unit that both heats and cools the house. It's been sufficient for well over a decade but since I increased the size of the house last year by closing in the Florida room, the use of the fake fireplace has become necessary to occasionally boost the warmth of the new room.
The funny thing is, when I first saw the original unit years ago, I thought it was tacky and pointless. Then I learned that it was a fully functioning heater and grew to appreciate it just a bit more.
The old "fireplace" sat beneath a custom-made entertainment center, so I had to find one that would slide into that same space. Amazon to the rescue! I found this model, which looks very much like the old one but is even better than the one I had before. The new model has a thermostat and a timer. It also has controls so that you can adjust the "flame" level.

While the flames are fake, the glow can be somewhat mesmerizing. With the 45-degree nights we've been experiencing in central Florida, this little gem has proved to be a most worthwhile investment.
