TURNING THE TABLE

Of the few things that I’ve updated at Perkins Place, I am most pleased with the new breakfast bar. For as long as I can remember, the kitchen has been graced by a built-in table that was custom-made just for that spot. It was okay but not particularly handy to use or comfortable to sit at.

The best solution was to remove the table and put in a small kitchen island with stools that could tuck underneath when not in use. I searched several sites and found quite a few that I liked. However, nothing really seemed to fit the look or feel of my tiny, rustic kitchen and, honestly, none of them made my heart go pitter-patter.

Price, as always, was a major consideration. I was determined to complete this update at a cost of no more than $200.00. If I couldn’t do it on that budget, I would just have to stick with the existing table.

I started researching other options, such as D-I-Y islands and counter height tables. I poured through Pinterest and multiple other sites for ideas. Finally, I found this bar table. The stools were included, the price was under budget, and it made my heart go pitter-patter.

This set is available through multiple stores but most predicted a four-to-six week wait for delivery, and I was only going to be at the house for another three weeks. Amazon not only offered the best price but also promised to have it delivered just in time.

It was worth the wait. It is exceptionally well made and was incredibly easy to assemble. It took me longer to disassemble the old wall table than it did to set up the new one.

Changing something that you’ve lived with for decades can be a bit disconcerting. The visual took me aback the first few times I walked into the room. I have no regrets, though. It fits my space beautifully. The stools can be pulled out from either side of the table, something that would not have been possible with traditional kitchen islands. It works out so well, in so many ways.

The unexpected bonus is that when you sit at the back side of the table, you get a wonderful view of the lake. Sitting there in the morning, coffee in hand, is a lovely way to start the day.
